From Local Datasets to Interoperable Resources: Metadata, Vocabularies and Domain-Specific Standards

Materials for Workshop 1 of the AnaEE-ERIC 2nd International Science Conference (Palais de l'Europe, Menton, 30 September 2026). The workshop asks how a dataset becomes something other people can use. It follows the idea of data publication from the four paradigms of science and the data deluge, through the shift from "sharing" to "Publication" with a capital P and the licensing question that comes with it, to the data paper, FAIR, trustworthy repositories, the cost of describing data, and the difference between structural and semantic interoperability. It closes on what the evidence now shows about whether any of it has worked, and on six questions that the literature does not answer. The presentation argues that describing data is the work, and that a description is only useful if a stranger, or a machine, can act on it. This record is therefore also meant to be an example of what it describes: it carries a persistent identifier, a licence that permits derivative works, subjects drawn from a controlled environmental vocabulary where one exists, and explicit links to the works it relies on.
