Mathematics education and giftedness: a scoping review

Abstract This study presents a scoping review of articles published in Web of Science and Scopus that examine mathematical giftedness in the context of mathematics education between 2014 and 2025. Following the Scoping Reviews guidelines (PRISMA-ScR), 98 articles were identified and included for analysis. The review aims to map the existing literature by identifying the main research topics, methodological approaches, and publication trends in this field. The analysis revealed six main areas of focus: students’ academic characteristics, psychological characteristics, curricular educational practices, extracurricular programs, teacher or student beliefs, and other related topics such as identification and previous reviews. The findings provide an overview of how mathematical giftedness has been addressed in recent research and highlight prevailing trends and gaps in literature. This scoping review offers a comprehensive picture of the field that may inform future research directions educational practice, and policy development related to mathematical giftedness.
