Post‐Mortem Findings in Buffy Tufted ‐ Ear Marmosets ( Callithrix aurita ) Diagnosed With Platynosomum sp.

BACKGROUND: The buffy tufted-ear marmoset (Callithrix aurita) is an endangered Brazilian primate and understanding the diseases that affect these animals is essential for improving their health and survival in conservational facilities. METHODS: This study compiled the macroscopic and microscopic findings from three C. aurita previously diagnosed with Platynosomum sp. infection at UNIVAP Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRAS). Gross examinations were performed at the institution, and histopathological analyses were conducted at the Adolfo Lutz Institute. RESULTS: All the animals exhibited significant lesions in the liver and kidneys and showed clinical signs in the ante-mortem examinations. Furthermore, lungs, spleen and intestines were also affected in at least in two out of three cases. Regarding the cause of death, two were attributed to liver injury and one to sepsis. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that post-mortem examination is essential for enhancing our understading of this disease in this species.
