Human Impact on At-Risk Areas and Health Challenges in the City of Man (Western Ivory Coast)

Abstract Since its municipalization in 1978, the city of Man has experienced rapid spatial and demographic growth. This rapid urban expansion has led to uncontrolled development of urban space. This uncontrolled development is evident in the human impact on areas prone to natural hazards. The unfavorable environmental conditions of these development zones expose residents to various health risks. The objective of this research is to study the health risks faced by residents of areas at risk from natural hazards, such as hilltops, hillsides, and riverbeds (low-lying areas). The methodological approach adopted is based on a literature review and a map of the city of Man. It also draws on interviews and observations of Man’s neighborhoods (Belle-ville, Blokhoss, Air-France, Libreville, Doyagouiné, Petit-Paris, Grand-gbapleu, Lycée extension, Thérèse). The results show a high concentration of areas at risk from natural hazards in Man. Recurring diseases frequently suffered by residents of these areas include malaria, diarrhea, typhoid fever, and respiratory infections.
