An Exploration of Domestic Violence and Factors Influencing Help-Seeking and Coping Mechanisms Among Hmong American Women

This study examines the help-seeking and coping experiences of 12 Hmong American women survivors of domestic violence, ages 43 to 60. Thematic analysis identified two main themes: sociocultural determinants of help-seeking and finding strength and growth during and in the aftermath of domestic violence. Findings revealed how sociocultural constructions surrounding marriage and divorce created obstacles to women's agency in help-seeking and how they took deliberate actions in transforming their pain into purposeful action. These findings advance understanding of the determinants of help-seeking and the sources that enhance growth and recovery in the aftermath of experiencing abuse.
