Xi Yin Yu Shi as the Source Code: Discovering the Creative Blueprint for Dream of the Red Chamber and Founding the Discipline of Civilizational Generatics
永久概念DOI:10.5281/zenodo.17780495. Abstract For nearly three centuries, the creative mechanism of Dream of the Red Chamber has remained a central enigma in Chinese literary studies. This study discovers and systematically demonstrates for the first time that Xi Yin Yu Shi, the sole surviving work of early Qing connoisseur Geng Zhaozhong (1640–1686), is the long-lost creative blueprint of Dream of the Red Chamber. Core evidence: seven sets of dominoes in Chapter 40 match exactly, in left-centre-right positions and pips, the seven sets recorded in Xi Yin Yu Shi. The textual fingerprint “日邊紅杏倚雲栽” appears verbatim under the “么四” domino in both texts. The only “error” in the game precisely violates the rule “二則爲雨” from Se Yang Ze Li. Chapter 40 remains textually stable across all early editions, unlike the rest of the novel. Seven sets of dominoes are bound to seven characters’ fates in a fixed, non-interchangeable way: Lin Daiyu’s assigned text is isomorphic with the “Burial of Flowers” episode; Granny Liu’s text closes the loop of rescuing Qiaojie. The study reconstructs the transmission chain from Geng Zhaozhong through Zhu Yizun and Cao Yin to Cao Xueqin, and repositions Geng Zhaozhong as a preeminent early Qing connoisseur: 135 extant works bearing his seals are held in public museums worldwide, including 107 paintings from the Yuan dynasty or earlier. It advances three theoretical propositions: a “civilizational symbol transcoding” mechanism, by which a high-energy symbolic system is identified, internalized, and re-narrated as a new literary work; the foundation of “Civilizational Generatics”; and the repositioning of Xi Yin Yu Shi as an irreproducible civilizational artifact. All evidence converges on the conclusion that Xi Yin Yu Shi possesses a civilizational value and rarity comparable to the lost original of Wang Xizhi’s Lantingji Xu. It is the copy collected by Zhu Yizun, used by Cao Xueqin, studied by the real-life prototypes of the inner-chamber ladies, and now held in Taipei.
