Demographic Decline and Labour-Market Mismatch in Northern Hungary: A Secondary-Data Synthesis

This working paper examines the relationship between demographic decline and labour-market mismatch in Northern Hungary, with particular attention to the counties of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves and Nógrád. Based on a synthesis of secondary statistical data, the study reviews long-term demographic trends, changes in the working-age population, labour-market tensions, migration, human-capital challenges and regional development implications. The analysis highlights the interaction between population decline, ageing, outmigration and skills mismatch in a peripheral Central European region. The paper contributes to the discussion on regional labour-market sustainability and provides a basis for further research on corporate and social-policy instruments that may support local retention and adaptation.
