Why Can Chords Be Used with "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"? The Role of Constraints in Music

This paper examines the role of chords in music through the familiar melody of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” The melody can exist without chords, which raises a simple question: why are additional sounds and chord structures used in accompaniment? The paper considers chords not only as combinations of sounds, but also as a framework that reduces the number of choices available when creating music. From this perspective, musical constraints may not simply restrict creativity; they can also support it. The paper also briefly considers how musical practices and theories have developed through the classification and sharing of recurring relationships among sounds.
