Green knowledge transaction networks, knowledge absorptive capacity and breakthrough green innovation

Purpose Drawing on the knowledge-based view, structural holes theory and absorptive capacity theory, this study aims to examine how firms’ structural advantages in green knowledge transaction networks affect breakthrough green innovation. It further investigates the mechanisms through which knowledge retrieval ability, knowledge integration ability, and knowledge absorptive capacity shape this relationship. Design/methodology/approach This study measures the structural advantage of the green knowledge transaction network by the structural hole index and measures breakthrough green innovation by highly cited green invention patents within the same technology field. Findings The results show that structural advantages in green knowledge transaction networks are positively associated with breakthrough green innovation. This effect persists over time but gradually weakens. Mechanism tests indicate that knowledge retrieval ability and knowledge integration ability are important channels through which network structural advantages are transformed into breakthrough green innovation. The moderation results show that knowledge absorptive capacity strengthens the positive effect of green knowledge transaction network structural advantages on breakthrough green innovation. Further analysis shows that this effect is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises and firms in low-technology industries, while there is little difference in the effect between polluting and clean industries. Originality/value This study introduces green knowledge transaction networks into knowledge management research and incorporates knowledge retrieval ability, knowledge integration ability, and knowledge absorptive capacity into a unified analytical framework. It reveals the conversion logic through which green knowledge transaction networks affect breakthrough green innovation.
