Strategic Communication and Soft Power in the Age of Media Globalisation: Rethinking Global Influence in the Digital Era

Media globalisation has transformed contemporary communication by accelerating the cross-border circulation of information, cultural products, and digital content. While existing scholarship has largely examined media globalisation through the lenses of media imperialism, cultural dependency, and international communication, less attention has been paid to its strategic dimensions. This paper reconceptualises media globalisation as a strategic communication environment in which states, organisations, and cultural actors compete to shape perceptions, construct identities, and influence audiences. Drawing on strategic communication perspectives and the Soft Power Theory, the study adopts a qualitative analytical approach based on review of relevant literature and contemporary developments in global media systems. The analysis argues that communication power in the digital era extends beyond media ownership and content production to include strategic narratives, platform visibility, audience engagement, and communication capabilities. The paper further demonstrates that while digital technologies have expanded opportunities for participation, significant inequalities persist in communication infrastructure, platform governance, and global visibility, particularly for countries of the Global South. The study contributes to contemporary debates by positioning media globalisation as a contested arena of influence, power, and strategic communication.
