Agency Was Never Eliminated: Black Teaching, Historical Stewardship, and Education Under Hostile Conditions: An Interview With Jarvis Givens

This interview with Jarvis Givens, author of the award-winning Fugitive Pedagogy: Carter G. Woodson and the Art of Black Teaching (Harvard University Press, 2021), was conducted in early 2025 during heightened federal and state legislative efforts aimed at banning books in P-12 schools and higher education, removing references to Black history and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from school and university policies, curricula, and instructional practices and eliminating DEI-related programs and funding in P-12 and higher education.
