Causes Of Students' Inattentive Attitude Towards Studying Biology Education in Tertiary Institutions

This undergraduate research project examines the factors contributing to students’ inattentive attitudes towards studying Biology Education in tertiary institutions. The study was conducted among 20–30 students in the Department of Science and Technical Education at Bayero University Kano, Nigeria. Data were collected through a questionnaire designed to investigate factors associated with students’ inattentiveness and engagement in Biology studies. The findings indicate that both intrinsic and extrinsic factors may contribute to inattentive attitudes, including difficulty understanding biological concepts, lack of interest, mental health-related challenges, classroom boredom associated with large class sizes, distractions, and external stressors. The study particularly highlights difficulty in understanding biological concepts as an important factor associated with students’ inattentiveness. The findings suggest the need for appropriate instructional strategies and targeted interventions to improve students’ attention, participation, and engagement in Biology Education at the tertiary level. This work was completed as a final-year undergraduate research project for the Bachelor of Science (Education) in Biology at Bayero University Kano in 2023, under the supervision of Dr. Ahmad Usman.
