Historical Bridges of Maden (Elazığ) District

Elazığ is a settlement in Anatolia that has retained its importance throughout history due to its natural resources, climate and geographical location, and is also rich in water resources. The district of Maden, situated within this settlement, stands out for its deep-rooted history and cultural riches. It is also significant for its water resources and the historic structures built on or around them. The main subject of this study is the historic bridges located in the Maden district of Elazığ and their state of conservation. Consequently, the primary aim of the study is a comprehensive examination of the bridges in Maden that possess historical significance. Within this framework, observations have been made regarding the architectural features of these historic bridges, as well as the purposes for which they were built and the dates of their construction. Furthermore, the current state of preservation of the structures has been addressed, and relevant observations have been presented. Following the introduction and methodology, the study provides information on the historic bridges in the Maden district of Elazığ under separate headings; it presents the bridges’ locations, historical data and architectural features, along with their dimensions, as well as current photographs and schematic survey drawings. Detailed conclusions regarding the state of preservation were drawn for each bridge based on the information gathered and on-site observations. Consequently, taking into account their state of preservation, comprehensive recommendations were put forward to ensure the bridges’ conservation and effective transmission to future generations. In this study, in addition to documents held in the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of the State Archives, use was also made of the Mamuret al-Aziz Province Newspapers, travelogues and printed works. As a result of the fieldwork and archival research carried out, a total of 13 historic stone bridges that have survived to the present day were identified in the Maden district of Elazığ. Almost all of these bridges are situated on the old Diyarbakır-Elazığ (Harput) road; only one of them (the Maden Bridge) features a two-span structure with a slightly pointed arch. The other bridges are single-span structures, featuring slightly pointed, semi-circular and flat arches.
