Trend of Electric Vehicle Adoption in Malaysia: Analysis of Registration Data from the Road Transport Department of Malaysia (2020–2025)

We analyse battery electric car registrations in Malaysia from 2020 to 2025 using Road Transport Department of Malaysia data. Registrations grew from 71 units in 2020 to 44,813 in 2025, a compound annual growth rate of 263.1%, with market share rising from 0.01% to 5.15%. Growth accelerated after the 2022 duty exemption for completely built units (CBUs) and re-accelerated in 2025 with Chinese brands and the Proton e.MAS series. Proton and Chinese-origin brands jointly account for over 90% of registrations in early 2026. Urban peninsular states dominate uptake, with penetration highest in Melaka and lowest in East Malaysia.
