Key Organizational Capabilities in a Complex Information Space: Integrating Information, Knowledge, Learning, and Adaptation for Sustainable Organizational Functioning

The development of information and communication technologies and the ongoing digitalization of socio-economic processes have increased the number of information sources, accelerated information flows, and intensified the interdependence of information processes, thereby transforming the conditions under which contemporary organizations operate. This study aims to identify the key organizational capabilities that support sustainable organizational functioning in a complex information space and to develop a conceptual model explaining the relationships among the characteristics of this environment, organizational requirements, organizational mechanisms, and the resulting capabilities. The study employs an integrative literature review, qualitative analysis of secondary data, and a comparative multi-context analysis based on five documented organizational cases. The integrative conceptual analysis, supported by secondary-data analysis and organizational examples, resulted in the identification of six organizational capabilities: information recognition and valuation, organizational attention coordination, knowledge integration and interpretation, the transformation of knowledge into coordinated decisions and actions, reflective learning, and organizational adaptation and renewal. The proposed concept views the complex information space as a dynamic environment in which organizations not only acquire and use information but also actively co-create this space through their own decisions, actions, and communication. The resulting conceptual model proposes that the identified capabilities may be interrelated and complementary and that their interactions may support sustainable organizational functioning. These relationships are presented as theoretical propositions requiring future empirical testing.
