Training home health aides to become peer coaches in mental health and wellness: The MINDSET Study

Home health aides (HHAs) experience high rates of stress, depression, and social isolation, which threaten their health and workforce sustainability. To address this, we adapted the evidence-based Living Healthy peer coach (PC)-led, CBT-based training program for HHAs and assessed its feasibility and acceptability. From February to July 2024 we conducted a mixed-methods, single-arm pilot study with English- and Spanish-speaking HHAs, in collaboration with the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Fund (TEF). Participants completed baseline and post-training surveys and an interview. Twelve HHAs from 12 unique home care agencies in New York, NY completed the training (mean age = 52.4 years, SD = 11.5; 92% female; 75% Black; 25% Hispanic). All were certified as PCs and reported satisfaction and confidence. Qualitative findings revealed increased confidence and motivation, improved health behaviors, barriers related to time, technology, and materials, and interest in future programs. The training program was feasible and acceptable. Trial registration : ClinicalTrials.gov; URL : https://clinicaltrials.gov/ ; Registration number : NCT06071221, NCT06071221.
