An evaluation study of functional adult literacy textbook

Evaluating textbooks in adult education is a felt need because adult learners' require andragogical approach differs from traditional pedagogy of formal schooling. Moreover textbooks are central to learning if it is prepared in a flexible context. The study addresses the need to decrease the mismatch of materials to adult contexts that can impair learning, equity, and programme effectiveness. The purpose of this evaluation study is to evaluate functional adult literacy textbook . Specifically, it tries to examine the layout and design of FAL textbook. It was to describe the content coverage and its relevance of the textbook in relation to curriculum framework. It also targeted to describe methodology, their varieties and learner centeredness. Moreover, it aimed to analyze the language fitness to adult learners in relation to their levels. Further, the study focused to examine the evaluation and assessment techniques as well as it aims to describe illustration quality and relevance. The textbook contents and the entire textbook are the major data source and experts of FAL were validation sources. Data were analyzed by describing contents and bodies of the textbook and complemented by experts' views. The result showed the textbook layout and design are adequately organized to the level of semi-literate. Contents are integrated to serve homogenous beneficiaries than specific. Methodologically, the textbook is limited to discussion. Mother tongue language is the strong side though there is difficulty of readability being it is beyond the emergent literacy. Assessment effectiveness, Illustration clarity and coloring are the other challenges for effective utilization of the textbook. The study addresses the need to decrease the mismatch of materials to adult contexts that can impair learning, equity, and program effectiveness to meet the target of Education Road Map and SDG goal four.
