A Colophon for Sale: Père Anastase's Inianis and the Limits of the Duplicate

Review of Matthew Morgenstern, “Père Anastase-Marie de Saint Élie and the Western Study of Mandaic”, Orientalia 93/2 (2024), 402 to 434. The review argues that the colophon of the Mandaic Iniani Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Ms. or. quart. 1032, and of its twin BnF Sabéen 28, is not a transcription of a lost exemplar but the colophon of the third part of Bodleian MS. Syr. f. 2(R), dated 1203 AH, rewritten in the places a buyer would check. The two colophons are given in parallel in an appendix. Marginalia, The Letterarchitect, ardwan.nl
