The Right Mobilizing Against Gender and Women’s Rights in Latin America

ABSTRACT Gender rights are under attack across Latin America. This article analyzes these threats to rights by “right-against-rights” (RAR) mobilizations in the region. We do so by drawing on an original RAR database of such mobilizations in seven countries and transnationally with over 700 mobilizations, 75.5 percent of them targeting gender rights. We further explore three emblematic case studies to analyze the dynamics of this recent phenomenon of anti-gender RAR mobilizations. Our findings develop new insights into who mobilizes against gender rights, against what sets of rights, how, where, why and when, and with what impact. In responding to these questions, we disaggregate different types of anti-gender rights actors, their motives, and their strategies. Our findings suggest that there is much more variety in the aims and tactics used by the RAR around gender than the existing literature captures.
