Hope in action: practical implications of Spe Salvi for athlete formation in Catholic schools

Catholic schools and universities have long embraced athletics as part of their mission to form well-rounded students, yet the deeper theological and moral significance of sports in this context remains under-examined. This paper proposes that organised sports programmes in Catholic schools and universities can serve as a ‘school of hope,’ a formative arena for cultivating virtue and integral human development. Drawing on a theological-educational methodology – including an analysis of the Church documents Spe Salvi, Gravissimum Educationis, and Giving the Best of Yourself, and an engagement with Catholic philosophy of education and sports ethics literature – the study elucidates how athletic participation can foster both cardinal virtues and theological virtues, especially hope. The study highlights how athletic discipline, teamwork, and experiences of striving and failure can be oriented toward transcendent goals, reflecting Spe Salvi’s understanding that Christian hope shapes how people live. By framing sports as a locus of character formation and spiritual growth, the paper offers a conceptual model for aligning school athletics with the Catholic educational mission. At its heart, the model maps Benedict XVI’s ‘schools of hope’, composed of prayer, action, and suffering, onto the rhythms of athletic life, showing how disciplined practice, communal worship, and shared trials can form students in hope and virtue within Catholic education.
