Sonographic Assessment of Prostate Volume, Prostate Dimensions, and Associated Factors Among Adult Men Attending the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia: A Cross‐Sectional Study

ABSTRACT The prostate gland is the only internal organ that continues to enlarge throughout adulthood, and it is an important parameter in the evaluation of benign prostatic enlargement and other prostate disorders. However, data on prostate volume and its associated factors are limited in Ethiopia. To assess prostate volume, prostate dimensions, and factors associated with prostate volume among adult men undergoing abdominopelvic ultrasonography at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, in 2021. An institution‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted among 325 adult male clients undergoing abdominopelvic ultrasonography. Participants were selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected through interviewer‐administered questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and transabdominal ultrasonography. Bivariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to identify factors independently associated with prostate volume. Statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05. The mean prostate volume was 24.69 ± 12.19 cm 3 , and 27% of participants had an enlarged prostate. Age (β = 0.005; 95% CI: 0.004–0.006), diabetes mellitus (β = 0.124; 95% CI: 0.078–0.169), hypertension (β = 0.065; 95% CI: 0.022–0.108), waist circumference (β = 0.005; 95% CI: 0.003–0.007), and cigarette smoking (β = 0.071; 95% CI: 0.019–0.123) were independently associated with prostate volume. In this hospital‐based study, prostate volume was independently associated with age, waist circumference, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cigarette smoking. These findings provide baseline evidence on prostate volume among adult men attending a tertiary hospital in Northwest Ethiopia and may help inform future community‐based and longitudinal studies.
