Before the World Was Watching: Qatar and the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship

Much of the existing scholarship on sport in Qatar has been shaped by the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the broader issues around it. However, many of the earlier moments in Qatar’s sporting history that were vital in shaping the country’s sporting identity have been largely overlooked. These include the hosting of the 1976 Arabian Gulf Cup, the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia, and Qatar’s first victory in the AFC Asian Cup in 2019. The 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship, as a shared experience around which national pride and collective memory took. Using material from Al-Raya, one of Qatar’s most influential newspapers, The tournament is read as a foundational moment in Qatar sport history. By doing so, it is made clear that football was embedded as a social and cultural practice in Qatar long before the 2022 World Cup, that on-field achievements were used as a measure of Qatar’s social progress, and that this success helped to define the country’s sporting identity in the subsequent decades.
