HEALTHY AGEING THROUGH PHYSICAL EXERCISE: A LIFELONG LEARNING PERSPECTIVE

This paper examines the role of physical exercise as a lifelong learning process that fosters healthy ageing. While exercise is often studied primarily for its physiological benefits, it is also an embodied learning activity that promotes cognitive, emotional, and social development. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure beyond resting expenditure. Ageing is a natural biological process often associated with physical, psychological and social changes. The concept of healthy ageing emphasises maintaining functional ability, independence, and overall wellbeing throughout life. Physical exercise has emerged as a cornerstone of healthy ageing, offering numerous benefits. Nevertheless, its promotion and adoption among older populations face several challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. Drawing on theories of adult learning, neuroplasticity, and health promotion, this paper highlights the multidimensional benefits of exercise and positions exercise as an essential component of lifelong learning. It analyses the physiological, cognitive, and social outcomes of exercise; explores how exercise itself embodies the principles of learning and adaptation; addresses barriers to participation; and outlines policy and practice implications. Ultimately, the paper recommends that physical exercise should be recognised not merely as a health intervention, but as a fundamental mode of lifelong learning that enables individuals to thrive across the lifespan.
