Typification of Caesalpinia desertorum and its nomenclatural priority over Caesalpinia bracteosa (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae)

Abstract Caesalpinia desertorum was not properly typified and has long remained of uncertain taxonomic position. A critical reassessment of the original material cited in the protologue, together with historical herbarium collections and associated literature, allows us to designate a lectotype and clarify its identity. Our analysis demonstrates that Caesalpinia desertorum corresponds to the same taxon currently known as Cenostigma bracteosum . As Caesalpinia desertorum was validly published in 1832, predating Caesalpinia bracteosa (1844), it has nomenclatural priority under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants . Accordingly, we propose the new combination Cenostigma desertorum .
