Automated openBIM-enabled semantic interoperability framework for arch dam digital twins in safety monitoring
Fragmented safety-monitoring data across the dam construction lifecycle hinder reliable digital twins and automated asset management. This paper examines how such information can be exchanged automatically and semantically across heterogeneous systems using open industry standards. An automated openBIM-enabled framework is developed by integrating digital-twin information modelling with Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and the Smart Applications REFerence ontology. A case study of an ultra-high arch dam validates the structured and traceable exchange of safety-monitoring information for digital twin applications. The results are important for owners and contractors because standards-based information continuity strengthens semantic consistency and interoperability in safety-monitoring processes. The framework provides a practical basis for future open-standard digital twins and further automation of construction lifecycle management systems.
