Joseph Ratzinger's Theology of Spiritual and Moral Evil, Demons and Hell

This paper argues that Joseph Ratzinger offers a coherent, Christ-centred, and pastorally sensitive theology of evil that holds together faith, reason, human freedom, and divine love. It examines his account of moral and spiritual evil, his defence of the personal reality of Satan and demons, and his guidance on discernment and safeguards in deliverance ministry. The paper also analyses Ratzinger’s eschatology of hell, arguing that he affirms its eternal possibility while locating damnation in free self-enclosure from love. It concludes that Ratzinger’s theology offers a hopeful “minority-occupancy” account of hell, shaped by Christ’s victory, intercession, and the communion of saints.
