Variation of the Leaves’ Acyl Solamine Profile in Backcrosses of Solanum tuberosum x Solanum bulbocastanum Somatic Hybrids
Abstract Resistance breeding for potato is an essential part of integrated pest management and urgently needed for economic agriculture facing the limitation of pesticides. Wild species are important resources for resistance genes, but also for resistance-relevant metabolites. Recently, we characterized C16:3(7Z,10Z,13Z)-solamine as a high abundant metabolite which accumulates in leaves of an accession of the multi-resistant wild potato Solanum bulbocastanum . We demonstrated its bioactivity against several pests and pathogens and proposed long-chain fatty acyl solamines as potential candidates for resistance breeding. Herein, we report the highly variable abundances of C16:3-solamine and further acyl solamines in a population derived from S. bulbocastanum x S. tuberosum somatic hybrids backcrossed with S. tuberosum varieties to examine variation in levels of this bioactive metabolite.
