SECURITY MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND ACADEMIC STAFF PRODUCTIVITY IN THE NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY

This study examines Security Management Strategies and Academic Staff Productivity in the Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State. The study was guided by four research questions. The Study adopted a descriptive survey design. The target population of the study was the one thousand and four (1,004) academic staff of the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State. A sample size of six hundred and sixty five academic (665) staff drawn from the entire population of one thousand and four was used for the study. The simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample. The Instrument used for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire titled: Security Management Strategies and Academic Staff Productivity in the Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State Questionnaire (SMSASPITNDUBSQ). The Instrument was structured on a four point scaling pattern of Very High Extent (VHE-4 point), High Extent (HE-3 point), Low Extent (LE-2point) and Very Low Extent (VLE-point). The Instrument was validated by two experts in Measurement and evaluation. The reliability was done using the Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. A total of thirty (30) copies were administered to academic staff at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) Rivers State Nigeria. A reliability index of 0.80 was established. The data was analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings from the study revealed that the installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras, adequate perimeter fencing of the school compound, the employment of adequate security personnel and the equipping and stationing of security personnel in strategic location in the school as security management strategy will enhance the performance of academic staff in the Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State. Based on the findings, it was concluded that adequate provisions and application of security management strategies will enhance academic staff productivity in the Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State as such the study therefore recommended that among others Management in the Niger Delta University should provide adequate security facilities such as hand guns, CCTV Cameras, tear gas, and bullet proof as well as securing perimeter fencing and limiting access point to school and employing enough security personnel as well as stationing them in strategic location for effective service delivery.
