Progress in Silk Fibroin‐Based Nanofibers for the Management of Diabetic Wounds: A Review
ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistently high blood glucose levels that leads to complications like diabetic wounds (DWs), which can be exacerbated by factors like weakened wound healing, peripheral arterial disease, and neuropathy, potentially leading to amputation. Silk biomaterials are attracting interest due to their specific qualities in DW healing, whereas bioactive compound‐incorporated dressings and polymeric nanofibers have become promising methods. Due to its excellent mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and inherent properties, silk fibroin (SF) emerges as a promising material for the treatment of DW. Silk biomaterials, with their improved physio‐mechanical strength and biocompatibility, have shown promising healing efficacy, resulting in faster tissue regeneration and wound closure. This review highlights the significance of effective therapeutic approaches while addressing the challenges and advancements in DWs management. Also, the review explores the wound healing process and assesses the therapeutic potential of bioactive dressings and polymeric nanofibers, with a particular focus on silk‐based biomaterials such as SF. However, to optimize formulation parameters and confirm efficacy in clinical studies, further investigation is necessary. More investigation is also necessary to confirm efficacy in larger clinical studies and refine formulation characteristics.
