Phlebotomine sand fly assemblages, blood-meal sources and trypanosomatid DNA in two contrasting veredas of the Brazilian Cerrado

Data and analysis code supporting the article "Phlebotomine sand fly assemblages, blood-meal sources and trypanosomatid DNA in two contrasting veredas of the Brazilian Cerrado" (Costa et al.). Phlebotomine sand flies were sampled in two veredas (palm swamps) of northern Minas Gerais, Brazil, with contrasting conservation levels: Vereda Almescla (preserved, Rio Pandeiros Environmental Protection Area) and Vereda Peruaçu (degraded, Veredas do Peruaçu State Park). In each vereda, five sampling points were established, each with one light trap in the vereda interior (hygrophilous vegetation) and one at the edge (adjacent cerrado sensu stricto). The ten traps per vereda were operated in two campaigns, one in the dry and one in the rainy season, giving 40 sampling units. All 577 specimens were identified to species; all 275 females were screened for trypanosomatid DNA (nested PCR, SSU rRNA) and blood-fed females were screened for blood-meal sources (cytochrome b). Collection permits: SISBIO 15237-2 and IEF 056/2021. The deposit contains one row per trap and campaign (sampling_units.csv), one row per specimen (individuals.csv), the sampling unit × species matrix (community_matrix.csv), the identified blood meals and the trypanosomatid-positive females, the same tables in a single spreadsheet, and the R script (code/analysis.R) that reproduces the descriptive statistics, the generalized linear mixed models, the effort-standardized richness, the composition analyses, the positivity estimates and Figures 2 to 4 of the article. The README file documents every column.
