THE ALGORITHM OF AFRICAN STUPIDITY: HOW WESTERN TECH GIANTS REWARD AFRICAN MEDIOCRITY AND IGNORE INTELLECT

This paper argues that Western technology corporations have built digital environments in which the ranking, recommendation and monetization systems systematically reward stupid, foolish and noisy African content while structurally suppressing African intellectual production. Drawing on documentary analysis of platform disclosures, whistleblower evidence, advertising economics, African scholarship on digital colonialism and the testimony of African creators themselves, the study demonstrates three interlocking mechanisms. First, engagement-based ranking is mathematically biased toward outrage, spectacle and cognitive shallowness, and the empirical literature confirms this. Second, the monetization architecture prices African attention so low, and excludes African creators from so many payout programmes, that the only content capable of surviving economically is content that chases volume rather than value. Third, platforms have chronically refused to invest in African languages, integrity systems and moderation capacity, which means the noise circulates freely while the systems that would protect serious discourse were never built for Africa at all. The cumulative effect, whether designed or merely tolerated, is a generation of African youth being taught by daily economic signal that foolishness pays and intellect does not, while extraction of African data, minerals, markets and policy concessions proceeds with diminishing public scrutiny. The paper concludes that this constitutes a functional continuation of colonial governance by algorithmic means and proposes a framework for African epistemic and economic recovery.
