When Current Taxids Make Historical Taxa Look New
CORRECTION NOTICE (24 September 2026). This preprint is now published as: Mahjoubi H. When current taxids make historical taxa look new. J Bioinform Comput Biol 24(4):2671004 (2026), https://doi.org/10.1142/S0219720026710046. After publication, the author found that the statement that 17 of the 56 flagged sequences were "genuinely absent" from the MSL39 snapshot "under any identifier" is incorrect for 16 of them: 15 were reassigned in 2024 to child nodes created beneath species already valid at MSL39 (a change not recorded in merged.dmp), and 1 has a predecessor identifier merged after the merged.dmp snapshot used. Only 1 (NC_121511.1) is a genome absent from the contemporary reference. The artifact therefore accounts for 55 of the 56 sequences, not 39; the retagging experiment, Table 2 and the recommendations are unaffected. A corrigendum has been submitted to the journal; its text is attached to this version (Corrigendum_JBCB_Mahjoubi.pdf). The manuscript file is unchanged.
