Investigation of Potential Drug-Drug Interactions Due to Linezolid Use in Anesthesia Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Study

ObjectiveThis study aims to clarify the possible interactions ofLinezolid, a drug used during infection treatment inintensive care units, with other drugs and to provideinformation to stakeholders in clinical use.Material and MethodData from the files of intensive care patients over theage of 18 who received at least 24 hours of inpatienttreatment between 2017-2023 in the intensive careunit of the Department of Anesthesiology and Re-animation in Suleyman Demirel University and whoused at least one other drug in addition to the activesubstance Linezolid during this period were used. Allthese data were evaluated with the Lexi-Interact pro-gram.Results68(36%) patients included in the study were exposedto polypharmacy for 2-22 days, 69(36.5%) patients for23-45 days, and 52(27.5%) patients for 46-197 daysduring their treatment. A total of 655 interactions wereidentified. Of these, 17(8.99%) type A, 172(91%) typeB, 183(96.83%) type C, 184(97.35%) type D, and99(52.38%) type X interactions were detected. As aresult of the examination of potential drug-drug inter-actions (pDDIs) in terms of dual drug use with Linezol-id, it was seen that the most frequent type C interac-tion could occur with Quetiapine (33;17.20%), type Dinteraction with Salbutamol (94;49.70%), and type Xinteractions which are not recommended for use sideby side with Linezolid could occur with Metoclopropa-mide (44;23.30%) and Escitalopram (11;5.80%).ConclusionLinezolid-treated ICU patients exhibited a high preva-lence of potential drug–drug interactions, particularlyinvolving sympathomimetic and serotonergic agents. These findings highlight the importance of routineinteraction screening and careful monitoring whenlinezolid is prescribed in critically ill patients.
