Social engineering is moving from electronic mail to messaging platforms, where the sender is weakly bound to an identity and a message need not carry a link. Existing taxonomies classify the channel and the procedure of an attack, but not what the pretext appeals to. This paper proposes a threat model for messaging platforms and a three-layer scheme that annotates separately the value addressed and the intended emotion, records the appraised state that links the two, and treats the principle of persuasion as the device of delivery. The scheme declares a small proportion of the admissible combinations compatible, states the claim as nine testable hypotheses, and is illustrated on pretexts published in official warnings.
