Books About Banned Books: What Does Today's Fiction Teach Adolescents About Censorship?

ABSTRACT This study examines how censorship and book banning are represented in contemporary middle‐grade and young adult literature through a qualitative content analysis of 20 novels published between 1980 and 2025. This study asks: What are the descriptive characteristics of this body of books and how do these fictional portrayals reflect or diverge from the real‐world censorship trends? Then, looking at the narrative patterns, what are the recurring themes surrounding civic engagement and censorship? Implications for educators include the potential to use these texts to foster civic engagement, informed discussions about censorship, and critical literacy.
