Clinical Characteristics of University Students Seeking Treatment for Compulsive Sexual Behavior : A Retrospective Study

Compulsive Sexual Behavior (CSB) is often associated with psychiatric comorbidity and functional impairment, yet little is known about the clinical characteristics of young adults. Clinical records of 47 referrals for students seeking CSB support at a university-based specialist NHS clinic were reviewed. Forty-four assessments were completed. Seventy-three percent of assessed cases presented with concerns over pornography use. Three-quarters (75%) met the threshold for CSB, of which 58% presented with one or more comorbid conditions. CSB was associated with significant impairment across work and social domains. Findings support the need for specialist services and further research to understand this population’s therapeutic needs.
