Core-self evaluation as a buffer against workplace bullying induced turnover intention of the IT professionals

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how different dimensions of workplace bullying (physical intimidation bullying, person-related bullying and work-related bullying) affect turnover intentions of the employees and moreover, the role of core self-evaluation (CSE) in the contribution of workplace bullying towards turnover intention. Design/methodology/approach The study has adopted a cross-sectional design. Data have been collected from 306 full-time IT professionals working in Chennai’s private IT firms and aged between 20 and 30 years. Standardised scales were used to measure all constructs. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed for all variables. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data, using SPSS 21 and AMOS v 22 software. Findings Results showed that workplace bullying significantly and positively contributed to turnover intention. CSE acted as a buffer between person-related bullying and work-related bullying and turnover intentions. Research limitations/implications This study may help the management of organisations to reduce the impact of workplace bullying by enhancing core-self-evaluation of the employees through training, coaching and leadership development interventions. Originality/value Although the impact of the dimensions of workplace bullying on turnover intention of the employees in service sector is well expected, the dynamic role of core-self-evaluation in this relationship has not been well studied, particularly in Asian context. The present study contributes towards that end.
