The German S3-level guideline for the diagnosis and management of rare dental disorders

Abstract Objectives The aim of this German S3-level guideline project was to develop evidence-based recommendations to support professionals in the diagnosis and management of individuals with rare dental disorders. The research question was which form of dental care should be part of an age-related, long-term treatment for individuals affected by amelogenesis imperfecta, dentinogenesis imperfecta, ectodermal dysplasia, X-linked hypophosphatemia, hypophosphatasia or rare periodontal disorders. Materials and methods The guideline development combines a systematic search of the literature, expert input from multiple disciplines and a structured consensus process. In addition to phrasing recommendations on clinical, radiological and genetic diagnostics, much emphasis has been placed on the development of disease-specific treatment recommendations. This article presents a summary of the German guideline. Results A total of 41 evidence- and consensus-based recommendations covering interdisciplinary collaboration, diagnostics, preventive care, restorative and prosthetic treatment, and orthodontic and surgical interventions were developed. The recommendations emphasise the importance of tailoring dental care to the individual patient’s needs. Conclusions For the first time, an evidence-based guideline is available for the dental management of individuals affected by rare dental disorders. The guideline provides practical guidance and highlights the need for interdisciplinary management approaches. Furthermore, the guideline establishes a foundation for standardised, evidence-based dental care. Clinical relevance This guideline is expected to improve oral health outcomes and quality of life in this vulnerable patient group. Although developed in Germany, it may inform adoption or adaptation internationally, thereby fostering harmonised standards of care in different healthcare systems.
