A method for diagnosing inflammatory periodontal diseases

Relevance. Periodontal diseases are widely studied today; however, a trend towards reduced morbidity has not been observed. Problems related to their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention remain not fully resolved, which necessitates further research. Objective. To improve the efficiency of periodontal disease diagnostics by using a developed method for the early detection of gingivitis and dental plaque. Materials and methods. A total of 958 individuals were examined, including 381 adolescents aged 15—17 years and 577 adults aged 18—43 years. For diagnosing inflammatory periodontal diseases, the developed method (Invention Patent No. 2843794 dated July 18, 2025) was applied using a staining agent. Based on the stained areas, the degree of gingival inflammation and the presence of dental calculus — a cause of periodontal diseases — were determined. Results and discussion. The developed method, using staining, allows for the identification of inflamed areas of periodontal tissue, enabling the diagnosis of gingivitis. This, in turn, improves the effectiveness of periodontal disease diagnosis and the early implementation of treatment and preventive measures. Conclusion. Performing an index assessment that accounts for the presence of inflamed areas in the marginal, interdental, and alveolar gingiva of the upper and lower jaws, as well as dental calculus on all surfaces of the dentition, increases the effectiveness of diagnosing the inflammatory process in periodontal tissues and does not require additional complex calculations.
