SOCIAL WORKSHOPS AS A SPACE FOR STRENGTHENING SOCIAL INCLUSION: THE CASE OF PERSONS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND/OR PSYCHOSOCIAL DISABILITIES
Social workshops are increasingly valued as a meaningful community-based service promoting social inclusion of persons with intellectual and/or psychosocial disabilities. The aim of this study is to explore how social inclusion is strengthened in social workshops. A qualitative research approach was employed through semi-structured interviews with five social workers employed in social workshops. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Three main themes emerged: (1) social workshop activities that strengthen social inclusion; (2) promotion of independence in the social workshop environment; and (3) challenges to strengthening social inclusion. Findings indicate that social inclusion is fostered through meaningful work activities, the development of social relationships, community participation, and involvement in decision-making. Independence is developed gradually through daily routines and the stepwise reduction of specialist support. The primary challenges identified were social stigma, employers' distrust, and limited organisational resources.
