Human transformation in Carl Rogers’ thought: a hermeneutically informed qualitative textual reconstruction

Carl Rogers is widely recognized as a foundational figure in psychotherapy, humanistic psychology, and person-centered education, yet his account of human change is dispersed across clinical, theoretical, educational, and philosophical writings rather than presented in a single integrated formulation. This article offers a hermeneutically informed qualitative reconstruction of Rogers’ view of human transformation. It analyzes six focal book-length primary texts published between 1942 and 1980, while treating Rogers’ 1957 and 1959 theoretical papers as contextual reference points rather than formally coded corpus documents. Through iterative close reading, memo writing, interpretive coding, conceptual clustering, and part-to-whole movement, the study reconstructs the implicit logic of transformation across these writings. The analysis makes three contributions. First, Rogers is read not only as a theorist of therapeutic conditions but as a thinker of human becoming, linking anthropology, relational ethics, change process, and developmental outcome. Second, it clarifies a process architecture in which transformation emerges through organismic tendency, relational safety, reduced defensiveness, openness to experience, symbolization, reorganization of self-structure, and a shift from externally anchored to organismically grounded evaluation. Third, it identifies tensions between organismic trust and social formation, non-directivity and facilitation, psychotherapy-specific change and broader life transformation, and early formulation and later dialogical-cultural expansion.
