WHAT ARE THE CORE FEATURES OF A GOOD GRANT APPLICATION?

Grant writing is a core part of academic work, yet we receive far less training in this than we do in how to conduct the science itself. In this lecture, I will start by helping you get into the mindset of the “lead reviewer”, that key person who will assess your application most closely and speak to it at the funding board meeting. That person can heavily sway decision-making so keeping them on side is critical. Also, helping your work shine for them will make it a more pleasant read for everyone - from your peer reviewers to other members of the board who might know very little about your methodological approach or condition of interest. Following this, I will provide both strategic and practical guidance that will help you present your ideas in their best light, and help the lead reviewer find what they need easily. I will end with a few reflections on how to find ways to prioritise time for grant-writing in your busy schedules.
