From Cognitive Delegation to Epistemic Agency: A Framework for AI-Mediated Research

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) increasingly participates in cognitive activities central to research, including searching, summarizing, interpreting, coding, conceptual development, and academic writing. This article examines a more fundamental question than whether AI should be used: under what conditions can researchers delegate cognitive tasks to generative systems while retaining meaningful epistemic agency? The article argues that cognitive delegation and epistemic delegation are analytically distinct. GenAI may participate in distributed cognitive processes without thereby acquiring equivalent epistemic agency, authority, or accountability. Building on this distinction, the article develops the Knowledge Orientation Framework (KOF) as a theoretical account of four interdependent capacities through which human epistemic agency can be analyzed under AI-mediated cognitive delegation: Epistemic Direction, Evaluative Judgment, Synthetic Integration, and Boundary Reflexivity. These capacities concern who determines the direction of inquiry, what warrants acceptance, how validated contributions are integrated into a defensible knowledge position, and where the legitimate boundaries of delegation are drawn. The article further theorizes a continuum from augmentation and bounded cognitive delegation to epistemic dependence and displacement, emphasizing that formal human authorship and accountability may persist even as substantive epistemic agency weakens. Doctoral formation is examined as a critical application rather than the framework's exclusive domain. KOF is presented as a theoretical framework whose propositions require future empirical examination across disciplines, institutions, languages, and resource contexts.
