Four Short Essays: The Story of Stone; The Story of Womanhood; Poor You, Single Freaks

Written by Chng Seok Tin (莊心珍, 1946–2019) under the pen name Zhuang Xin, these four texts: The Story of Stone (石头的故事), The Story of Womanhood (女人的故事), Poor You (你真惨), and Single Freaks (单身怪族), offer critical insights into how feminist consciousness emerged and operated within Singapore’s conditions of rapid modernization and social engineering during the 1990s. Written in the sanwen (散文) form, which blends personal reflection, social commentary, and lyrical observation, the four texts work across registers of art criticism and autobiographical prose. The Story of Stone and The Story of Womanhood function as acts of critical advocacy, documenting the work of contemporary women artists Han Sai Por and Suzann Victor in a male-dominated art world. Poor You confronts the casual ableism and sexism embedded in a seemingly mundane taxi ride, exposing how disability and unmarried womanhood become sites of pity and condescension—and refusing victimhood with characteristic humor and sharpness. Single Freaks dissects the cultural anxieties surrounding unmarried women in a society where family formation had become both economic strategy and political ideology. Together they constitute a form of situated feminist witnessing, written from within the conditions they describe.
