From Early Signal to Operational Capability: Akebia quinata as a Test Case for Underutilised Crop Innovation, Protein Diversification and Functional Coupling in Europe
This research proposition examines Akebia as a concrete test case for underutilised crop innovation in Europe. It brings together evidence on European fruiting, reproductive biology, seed-oil composition, possible protein co-products, perennial production architecture and environmental constraints, while maintaining a strict distinction between A. quinataand comparative evidence from A. trifoliata. The proposition is positioned within current European priorities for protein diversification, agricultural resilience and reduced external dependency, including the 2026 EU Protein Action Plan and related European Commission research and innovation priorities for underutilised crops. It develops a falsifiable research architecture for determining whether an observed biological signal warrants progression towards agronomic testing, value-chain development and operational capability, or evidence-based rejection. Beyond the crop case, the paper examines how functional coupling between research, agricultural practice, Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS), skills development and decision-making may influence the responsiveness of European agricultural innovation systems. Functional coupling is treated as a potentially transferable systems relation: evidence becomes consequential only when it changes action across research, production, skills and governance boundaries. The case therefore provides both a bounded crop research proposition and a prospective test of how emerging agricultural opportunities are recognised, evaluated, translated and either stabilised into operational capability or rejected on the basis of evidence.
