HOW TO WRITE A STRONG FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION

This session will offer practical advice for early career researchers preparing fellowship applications in psychiatric genetics and related areas. Drawing on experience from major national and international funding schemes, the session will focus on general principles that are relevant across funding agencies and career stages. Topics will include developing a strong research question, shaping a clear and feasible project, aligning the fellowship with career development goal, and presenting the “person, project and place” elements used in fellowship assessment. Examples of common strengths and weaknesses in fellowship applications will be discussed, alongside practical advice on demonstrating independence, leadership potential, and future vision. The session will also briefly consider the appropriate use of AI in grant writing.
