Raising the profile of indexing: National Indexing Day 2026
National Indexing Day (#IndexDay) has been running every year since it was established by Paula Clarke Bain and Ruth Ellis in 2017, to celebrate and promote the profession of indexing. National Indexing Day takes place at the end of March, on the anniversary of the founding of the Society of Indexers in the UK. In 2026, #IndexDay was marked with in-person publisher workshops and on social media. This article describes this year’s activities and considers their impact on the profile of indexers and indexing.
