Precedence Does Not Imply Financing: From the Reclassification of Relations in MMT to the Revision of the Event Partition in Schmittian Monetary Theory—Theoretical Preconditions for Diagnosing the Accumulation of Capital Malformation

This working paper begins from the research hypothesis that, if the logic of Schmitt (1984) is extended to the present, the pathology he called capital malformation should have accumulated rather than disappeared over more than four decades and should by 2026 be far more advanced than it was then. This pathology need not appear as an accounting inconsistency or a failure of transactions. Payments may be completed and entries may balance, while profits, investment, fixed capital, and financial assets increase, even as the correspondence among output, income, capital formation, amortization, and production in the next period deteriorates. The paper neither empirically establishes this historical hypothesis nor provides a complete definition of capital malformation. As a theoretical precondition for investigating it, the paper asks whether an operation that precedes another in time or by institutional rule may be treated as an independent prior stock that finances the later operation. It formalizes a comparison scenario as Σ = (U, P, θ, Π, O) and distinguishes precedence in an execution sequence, protocol-required precedence, generation, and financing by an independent prior stock, PriorFund_Σ. MMT retains taxes, bond issuance, Treasury balances, and government spending as distinct events while reclassifying the relation R among them. Mosler’s account of reserve provision functions as an analytical intermediate term: it relocates reserve provision from “before” lending to “after” payment while retaining the event partition among lending, payment, and reserve provision. By contrast, the Schmittian theoretical specification θ_S reconstructed from published sources relocates the credit function from an independent prior loan to an internal component of wage payment W*, thereby revising the event partition Π that determines what counts as one event. The paper further distinguishes P1, the correspondence between output and wage income, from P2, the aggregate attribution relation among workers, output, and bank deposits. It also separates S1a, the accounting sequence of lending, a firm deposit, and a wage transfer, from S1b, the stronger interpretation according to which the firm first owns completed purchasing power and subsequently transfers it to workers. Sequential Provenance Comparison (SPC) does not generate the semantics by which capital malformation is diagnosed. It translates those semantics into executable operation sequences and tests whether the corresponding entries balance, whether the paths are reachable, whether their provenance can be traced, and whether they remain distinguishable under observation maps. Abstract

The single-period comparison framework established in this paper provides the minimum analytical unit for subsequent research on the accumulation of capital malformation across periods.
