ACCOMMODATION VERSUS CONTROL: A CROSS-DISCIPLINARY FRAMEWORK WITH EVIDENCE FROM MACROECONOMIC DYNAMICS AND IDENTITY FORMATION
Accommodation versus Control is proposed as a way of separating two effects that are often treated as one: a change in the rate at which a system adjusts and a change in the state toward which it adjusts. The distinction yields four empirical cases—accommodation, control, mixed operation, and neither. I examine whether these cases can be identified in simulation and whether the same logic is informative in two very different settings: an Egyptian survey on knowledge generation and identity, and quarterly output dynamics in Saudi Arabia, the euro area, and the United States. The economic sample spans 2010Q1–2024Q4 and provides 58 usable regression observations for each economy. Monte Carlo experiments recover the intended mechanisms when the target is known and the information set is adequate. The survey variables predict identity-related outcomes, but extensive straightlining, ceiling effects, and limited discriminant validity weaken the proposed measurement structure. In the primary macroeconomic specification, the euro area provides the only joint accommodation result. Saudi Arabia yields no supported channel, while the United States evidence is not robust. Results based on alternative targets are more favourable to accommodation, yet none of the augmented models improves the reported forecast-origin checks relative to the baseline. The study therefore establishes a testable research design, not a general law. Further progress depends on better measurement, independently identified targets and shocks, and replication beyond the present samples.
