A Conceptual Framework for Brand Identity Development in Traditional Performing Arts

This research investigates the conceptualization and design methodology employed in developing the visual identity of a Kathak dance institute through a practice-based case study undertaken as a freelance design project. The study examines the process of translating traditional Indian classical art forms into a contemporary, scalable, and enduring brand architecture that reflects individual artistic practice, cultural values, and the evolution of the institution. Design Approach/Methodology: The methodological framework adopts a structured, concept-driven progression transitioning from a cultural design brief to a flexible corporate identity system. The visual execution merges the Pushpata Hastak (the traditional flower-offering gesture) with the botanical metaphor of a blooming lotus, signifying resilience and transformation. Furthermore, the design incorporates the founder's distinct silhouette, integrates fundamental Kathak rhythmic syllables (Ta, They, Tat) into the floral petals, and pairs a customized serif wordmark (Cormorant Garamond) with legible sans-serif and Indic typography. Findings: The study evidences that synthesizing deeply personal, culturally embedded narratives - such as the founder's physical posture and canonical dance vocabulary - elevates a standard logo into an authentic personal signature. The resulting multi-layered brand system guarantees aesthetic consistency across primary vertical, horizontal, and monochrome configurations while enforcing rigorous spatial criteria. Practical Implications: The empirical insights provide a replicable framework for branding traditional performing arts institutions, demonstrating how cultural authenticity and modern design scalability can successfully integrate to bolster institutional positioning. Originality/Value: This paper contributes a novel methodological case study bridging classical Indian performing arts and contemporary graphic design, illustrating how heritage-driven concepts can be systematically structured into versatile visual frameworks
